NEW PUBLICATION

The Workbasket Vol. 15 No. 9

I-WB153 The Workbasket Vol. 15 No. 9 – June 1950
This issue has lots to crochet: a tablecloth, infant sandals, pillow case insert, Star of Star doily, pinafore dish cloth, and an original cover for a hot pad asbestos mat. For tatters, there are a handkerchief with tatted edging and a primer on tatting. There is a knitted lace and also tips for knitting. Included is a template for the Friendship Dahlia quilt and a June Bride to applique. There are articles on painting figures and making a curio from a wood tray. Food covered are 2 puddings from scratch, marshmallow ice cream, French dressing, and summer salad. Books reviewed were on how to do leathercraft and southern cooking.
Stapled softcover, 48 pages. Scanned 400dpi png.
From the collection of Sarah Dalton, scanned by Seya Wijnsma-Spek, edited by Linda Mays. Published with kind permission of F+W Media, the current copyright holder.

Gone are the days (I hope) that we have asbestos mats to put hot pans on. But the cover still can be used for any other heat-proof mat or tile. I still remember my mother had a round asbestos mat but none of her children inherited it, so I hope it was safely discarded. It’s like many new inventions (although asbestos was not new, it’s been known since the beginning of civilization) that are perfect for one application, but carry so many disadvantages that, alas, we’ll have to make do with less than perfection.
