CVL WRAPS UP PARTICIPATION IN VWEC SUMMER OF COMMUNITY

Community Virtual Library (CVL) had one of over 50 kiosks as part of the Virtual Worlds Education Consortium (VWEC) first ever Summer of Community. The turnout for the event overall went very well, and Community Virtual Library thanks Virtual Worlds Education Consortium for allowing them to participate. A wide variety of educational and nonprofit organizations showcased, as did vendors who support educational and nonprofit organizations. Given the strong interest in the event, the Virtual Worlds Education Consortium was able to extend the end date of the Summer of Community for ten extra days, ending on August 25th instead of the originally scheduled August 15th.

One particular advantage that this gave Community Virtual Library was that their booth including information on the Nonprofit Commons Resource Center that they maintain for Nonprofit Commons (NPC). Kreatya Shannon in Second Life – Shannon Broden – was part of the collaboration team for the remodel of the resource and happened to be moderating a discussion at Nonprofit Commons on “Learning from One Another” as part of Virtual Worlds MOOC 2026. The work that Community Virtual Library and Nonprofit Commons did together served as one of the examples to kick off the presentation. People who attended the MOOC still had several extra days to check out the fair and learn not only more about the collaboration, but about Community Virtual Library as a whole and the various things that it offers for the virtual worlds community. This had not been an intended tie-in as the MOOC event had been pitched independently and scheduled after the original end date for the Summer of Community, though in the end everyone benefited as part of the power of community.

Again, Community Virtual Library would like to thank the Virtual Worlds Education Consortium for allowing participation, as CVL wraps up participation in the VWEC Summer of Community for this inaugural event.
