J-JN004 The Workbasket Vol. 16 No. 4
To tat, we have a collar or doily edging, and a lace insert. For knitters, we have a shawl, a blouse, men’s loafer socks, lace edging, and an insertion. To crochet, we have a leaf hot pad, a geometric scarf or pillow top that matches the vanity set published in the November issue, a bed doll pajama pouch, a loop stitch rug, hat, a scarf or runner, an edging, and three doilies: the Violet doily, Fun and Fancy doily, and Shell doily. To sew, we have the January Boy. Ms. Ruth explains how she uses starch and salt (clay-like) to make sculpted birds, figures, and flowers for sale. She uses a porcelain glaze to preserve them. The article, “Meet the Apron Lady”, is about Mrs. Loring’s apron business. Ten years and 10,000 aprons later, she is still going strong. The article, “Dressing up Sugar Cubes”, tells us how Ms. Barnes take sugar cubes with icing decorations and turns it an international business. She makes between 400 to 800 decorated party sugars an hour. For recipes we have ice box rolls and muffins from scratch. Cooking experts explain how to judge bread contests and to avoid common faults with bread making. Aunt Ellen talks about how to scrapbooking. She suggests for the homemaker to keep a scrapbook for patterns, directions, and household hints. The garden expert discusses how to care for dahlias, geraniums, inside ivy, tomatoes, poinsettias, and chrysanthemums. Creative women profit by making bonnets from handkerchiefs, cross stitched drawstring bags, embroidered pictures, and bottle cap mud doormat.
