NEW PUBLICATION

The Workbasket Vol. 17 No. 5

I-WB175 The Workbasket Vol. 17 No. 5 – February 1952
My favorite in this issue are the tatted heart earrings that could double as shamrocks. Also to tat: a tablecloth, and a heart insert for a blouse. to knit is a child’s jacket. To crochet are baby booties, potholders, hot mat, doily, buffet runner, luncheon set and chair set. The plant section covers starting violets, how to grow a water lily on your back porch, and more. There is a cool article on Ming trees. Recipes include cherry pudding and a cherry nut cake. There is a detailed as article on how to do Batik printing. There is also a great article on St. Valentine’s Day and its customs. I hope I can find the book, “Jewelry Making with Wire”. They claim all you can make jewelry with an eggbeater and a screwdriver.
Stapled softcover, 80 pages. Scanned 400dpi bitmap.

It’s funny how words can change over time. The Ming trees covered in this issue are currently better known as bonsai. Growing a nice bonsai tree may take several lifetimes, and it’s possible that growing a bonsai in a few years might not be as easy as portrayed here. There has been a hype of making little bonsai-like sculptures with wire and beads or chips of semi-precious stones, I remember my mother having one. I also remember it was hideously expensive, maybe because the chips were rose quartz to imitate a cherry tree. And my mother was good with anything that had green leaves, but she never attempted bonsai.
