A-MH050 Magasin des Demoiselles – Three embroidery patterns 1852-1853
Supplement of the Magasin des Demoiselles, year 1852-1853. Two all-over repeating abstract patterns in bright colors, suitable for furniture, purses, slippers. One border pattern with flowers and vines.
Stiff cream cardboard, 13.5 by 6.5 inch. Litho print. Scanned 300dpi bmp.
From the collection of Marleen van Horssen, edited and charted by Sytske Wijnsma.
The patterns in this supplement were actually numbered 1 2 and 3, which means they are likely the first ones published in the volume 1852-1853. Repeating patterns like these have been used in stool and cushion covers, and also in the simple purses such as F-RT001 Purse embroidered in Berlin woolwork that might well have been a schoolgirls first application of woolwork embroidery.

A-MH049 Journal des Jeunes Personnes – Slipper top in red and brown on green background
Embroidery pattern for a slipper top in red and brown shades and two dragon-like heads on a green background. For cross-stitch or tapisserie. No date.
Lithographic print, 9.5 by 10.5 inch. Scanned 300dpi bitmap.
From the collection of Marleen van Horssen, edited and charted by Sytske Wijnsma.
The Journal des Jeunes Personnes was clearly not intended for toddlers. The patterns from this publisher are however usually simpler and smaller than those of the other ladies magazines, and could be executed by younger children.
