Back in the old times that we don’t remember anymore because none of us lived in the nineteenth century and few remember a childhood before World War 2, your household linens were marked. This was usually done with a cross-stitch marking stitch such as Sajou put out patterns for by the hundreds, as did many other well-known publishers. But wealthy households could farm out their linen marking work to professional embroiderers or even schools where the girls learned embroidery by marking stacks of linen (I’ve seen a towel marked with initials and the number 56). White embroidery had the advantage that it doesn’t shed color and makes colored spots on your white linen. The patterns for these embroideries could be simple or complex. This booklet has the complex kind of design. Also in those old times, nobody had textile color markers, nobody painted T-shirts, and nobody traced initials on the doors of bedrooms or indeed on a front door. But you can do any and all of this and think of other ways to use them for yourself. Have fun and channel your creative self!
